Making a Video for your web site

Blimey this stuff takes time!

I’ve started wearing a cravat and have ordered a directors chair from eBay.  It’s great fun and I feel like one of those guys from the hit BBC4 series Mad Men (great show Beeb).

Well here’s my latest video.  It supposed to say that JDC has been around since 1996, we seen some changes and we have acquired the experience as a result of those changes.  We’re still in the market, so come and talk to us if you need assistance in the financial services recruitment sector.

Anyway take a look and give some feedback.  Please be gentle!!!

JDC – About Us New Video

Ok we are trying to catch up with the social media race and the latest thing is video.

Everyone’s at it!

Apparently text is dead and no one wants to read boring text on web sites, they want short video clips that help them to understand what you do and more clips that tell them how to do those things.

So here we go with the first of a trillion clips that will be coming your way.  Or at least they will be on our web site and here on the blog and we will have to tweet them of course and let’s not forget all the other social sites where we can post them.  I’m never going to see my family, drink beer or sleep again.

Anyway here’s the link  http://bit.ly/a28eqs

I’m off to film some more!

Tips on creating a CV

Your story and nothing but your story. Be honest, or you will be found out!

The following points should help you on your way to creating your cv.

Presentation

These day’s most cv’s are sent via email.

  • Choose a common font such as calibri, verdana, arial or century gothic
  • Choose black font
  • Make sure your headings are in ‘bold’ and use a larger font size than your standard text
  • Avoid decoration and don’t add an ornate border
  • Try to keep your CV to two pages
  • Photos can be a distraction so leave them off and make the words work!

Structure

  • Have a clear structure that’s easy to understand and read. Your aim is to present facts about yourself concisely and with clarity
  • Put your name right at the top of the front page, with your contact details directly underneath.
  • Don’t include your work number – it’s not fair on your present employer!
  • Write a short profile
  • Your educational history, academic achievements and work experience should be listed in reverse order – university degree should come before your school exam results
  • Never leave gaps – If you took a year out, or carried out interim assignments, say so – otherwise, employers can suspect the worst
  • List your career history – current position followed by previous and so on
  • Date to and from – Company name – Position
  • Use bullet points rather than complete sentences and focus on achievements
  • A one line description saying why you left is helpful i.e. ‘redundancy’, ‘career development’, ‘improved prospects’, ‘promotion’ etc
  • Leave your hobbies and interests until last and and keep this section short
  • Double-check and proofread
  • Check your CV carefully – always run a spell check over it carefully and re-read to ensure accuracy; ask a friend to check it too

Your CV is the first opportunity to make a first impression, so take the time to get it right as you may not get a second chance!

Why do Mortgage Advisers leave their job?

An interesting conversation this morning with an experienced senior manager. Retaining mortgage advisers in this current market is a priority. Why do mortgage advisers leave within the first year?

1.       Is it income?
2.       Is it lack of career progression?
3.       False promises?
4.       Lack of support?

What criteria do we use to judge someone’s success?

What is the measurement of a successful career?  What criteria do we use to judge someone’s success?

Here’s five to get started –

1.       Wealth
2.       Awards
3.       Trophies
4.       Status
5.       Title

What do you think?

I Want To Be The Winner!

I want to be the winner!

She howled and wailed for two hours as we returned home after visiting a country show. I am referring to my daughter who after watching a horse event competition decided that she wanted to be a winner and have a rosette. She wanted the limelight and praise from others, she wants to be a winner! We eventually explained that winning had a formula. In this case it was buying a horse (we don’t own one), learning to ride, practicing hard and often and then entering the competition.

Later on I thought about her desire for winning and compared to the conversations I have on a daily basis with people who express little or no desire of being a winner in business or their careers. What happens to the desire expressed in youth? Where does it go? Clearly it exists and these people are easily recognized as ‘high achievers’.

Is becoming a winner a natural element we all possess? I  don’t know, but what I do know is, most employers want to hire winners, and a ‘winning mentality’ is a winning attribute. If you are applying for jobs in sales then you need to adopt a winning attitude and express this desire right at the off.

This lesson made me ask myself whether I tried hard enough to win? I pulled up short in my brief examination and decided to make more effort. All I need now is a stallion and some riding lessons. Bring on the competition, I want to be a winner!

I love bank holidays.Thank you Banks!

It’s Tuesday, but actually it still feels like Monday and that’s because we had one of those great bank holidays! Thank you Banks for giving me my extra day’s holiday. If it were not for you I would not have had any holidays now for the last three years. Yes, that’s correct, just about the time of the recession, which was pretty much down to the banks in the first place!

My boss, who is my personal coach and general life guru (she also cooks my meals and looks after my kids) looked at my Blog and said I was just a moaner, which is probably true. I’ve just started this blog and all I have done is moan. So am I about to put this right? Well maybe but not today!

What’s your excuse? I’m an Ostrich!

With all the various forms of communication available i.e letter – email – text – I.M – phone – smoke signals – pigeon carrier, you get my point.
It’s virtually impossible not to communicate.

Agreed? Or is it?

Having had a conversation about potential opportunities and agreeing to work with the recruitment consultant, why do some candidates ignore all requests to communicate?

Ok so let’s examine a few potentials;
1.      You’ve changed your mind?
2.      You don’t like the recruiter?
3.      You don’t like the opportunities discussed?
4.      You’ve lost your mobile phone?
5.      You can’t get access to your email?
6.      You’re not allowed to make calls during office hours?
7.      You never have a lunch break?
8.      You never take a comfort break?
9.      You don’t have email or a mobile signal at your home?
10. By now you get the point, however I wanted to make 10 points! I’m guessing if you are a recruiter you may have experienced some of the above so we will leave it there.

Candidates are quite right to criticise recruiters who don’t acknowledge job responses, emails, calls, feedback etc. So maybe this is the balance, the redress, the ying and yang of life?

Take the ostrich, by now we all know what it’s strategy is. Does it work? Is it effective? Make up your own mind. However, short term strategies will usually produce short term results. Anyway the ostrich didn’t have a signal on his mobile and couldn’t call for help. Come on all you network providers, get your act together and help out the ostrich!
